Echo comes from sound reflecting around a room. Reduce those reflections during recording before relying on software to fix them afterward.
A practical way to begin
Choose a smaller furnished space with curtains, upholstered seating or other soft surfaces.
Move away from bare corners, tiled rooms and large glass areas.
Place the recording device closer to the speaker while keeping speech comfortable and natural.
Listen to a test containing ordinary conversation and a few pauses.
For example
Recording near a sofa and curtains may produce a clearer voice than using the same phone at the far end of a bare kitchen table.
What to avoid
Avoid covering the microphone with fabric. Software noise reduction cannot reliably remove every room reflection without affecting the voice.
Should I keep the original material?
Yes. Keep an untouched source and work with copies. A finished album, transcript or edited video serves a different purpose from the original material. Check that your saved copies open, and keep important context such as names and dates alongside them.

A personal keepsake, if it fits your plans
