An unedited interview copy is the reference for every transcript, excerpt and listening version. Preserve it before making improvements.
A practical way to begin
Copy the recording from the device to a clearly labeled originals folder.
Check that the copied file opens and contains the full beginning and ending.
Make a separate backup in another location.
Create working copies for trimming, cleanup or transcription, keeping their relationship to the original clear.
For example
A folder can contain the original recording, an edited listening copy and a note listing the changes made to that copy.
What to avoid
Avoid overwriting the source file with a cleaned version. An edit that sounds better may still remove context a future listener needs.
Should I keep the original material?
Yes. Keep an untouched source and work with copies. A finished album, transcript or edited video serves a different purpose from the original material. Check that your saved copies open, and keep important context such as names and dates alongside them.
